When Cry It Out Backfires

October 4, 2018 Brittany G.

I’ve lost track of how many times we have done “sleep training”. What I failed to realize the first half dozen times around the block, was that it isn’t a one-time ordeal. Between teething, growth spurts, and new developing sleep rhythms, this is an ever on going process. Waves of ups and downs.

I can’t complain too much. She’s always slept for relatively long periods of time, even as an infant. Though as a child who insisted on going to bed at 6pm for the longest time, that still put her at waking up hours before I would want to. So we’d nurse, and she’d go back to bed.

A few weeks ago we decided that the 3am wake ups that had become a new norm needed to go. We did cry it out, once again. As usual, by day 3, the crying at 3am stopped. Only now she wakes up at, oh, I don’t know, somewhere between 4:45am and 5:30am, ready. for. the. day.

So what now?

As they say, “This too shall pass.” In the meantime I’m surviving on a gallon and a half of coffee a day.

If you have tips on getting your kid to sleep in - if only until 6:30am, I am all ears!
